hague for those of you who don't know me. i was appointed by president obama a little more than two years ago to be united states attorney and it is my incredible honor to represent the president, the obama administration here in the northern district of california. welcome to the stop bullying summit. i'm a federal prosecutor so it may seem odd that here we are talking about bullying and we asked all of you to be here and i want to explain the origin of that and why this happened. you people, everybody in this room, has been involved in this issue and is doing incredible work on this issue and we were so honored to be a part of it and to meet with all of you and to speak with you about it. the origin is that as the united states attorney, the administration wants me, wants all the united states attorneys, to go out into the community. it's actually a very different role for the united states attorney is envisioned by this administration. this administration, the president, attorney general holder, they want the u.s. attorneys to go out into the attorney to talk to the communitie

of appropriateness. i find it despicable. this is why. it's part of a larger narrative which president obama explicitly stated yesterday and impuning the motives. it's draping yourself in the emotionalness of the debate. avoiding the policy debate and impuning others. he said that there will be others that say they are doing it for money. for anyone that doesn't care about these children, only out here to be a mouthpiece of the nra or to seek some kind of money, it is showing, in the end -- this is what it shows, the inherent intellectual weakness in the argument being put forward. the inherent policy weakness of what is being suggested. just deal with it in a rational level. >> okay. so we're talking about dealing with this in an intellectual way, the nra ad using obama's children to make a point. maria in. >> to use will's word, that is absolutely despicable. the children of president, the spouses of presidents, president's families are off limits and so i think the majority of americans believe that ad was absolutely d despicable. i think bringing into this the effect that this event had

barack obama, will be sworn in for the second term as the 43rd president of the united states. a ground breaking presidency to say the least but no president is as groundbreaking as george washington. when he became the first president, there was no precedent. every other president follow it is script by the man on the dollar bill. the history piece examines the evolving role of the presidency. joining us now, steve gillan. how are you? >> doing great. thanks for having me on. >> i'm fascinated how george washington shaped the presidency in to what we have now. talk a little bit about how george washington wrote the stript is that all other presidents follow. >> sure. i want to finish that story that your lead-in talked in about the title that washington would have and he wanted his excel len sy because he didn't want people touching him. instead of shaking the hand, they would bow so that's one of the reasons he liked it but washington really does -- you have to realize the presidency is an institution result of compromise and it's -- there are very few powers that are laid out in the

the state department. we begin with president obama going big and trying to move fast on gun control. we have new polling that may help explain the political need for speed. today at the white house, as you probably know, president obama laid out a number of proposals and executive actions he is taking. in the room with him were a number of parents of children killed in the sandy hook elementary school in newtown, connecticut, including lynn and chris mcdonnell, the parents of grace mcdonnell. president obama spoke about grace today. >> and when i visited newtown last month, i spent some private time with many of the families who lost their children that day. and one was the family of grace mcdonnell. grace's parents are here. grace was 7 years old when she was struck down. just a gorgeous, caring, joyful little girl. i'm told she loved pink. she loved the beach. she dreamed of becoming a painter. and so just before i left chris, her father gave me one of her paintings. and i hung it in my private study just off the oval office. and every time i look at this painting, i think about grace

, but it appears that they're going to try to take this to the state level to try and counter balance what president obama's going to try to do from the local level as well. the only way this gets down to what the president wants is to have a ground swelling from a grass roots level. the way he won the election is the way he's going to try to move and make some amendments to try and get some gurns out of circulation. but it's just like the mothers against drunk driving type of an issue. for a while people didn't want it, then they thought it was silly and then it became a ground swell of grass roots support. thankly it's smart for this reason. it kind of gives cover for the democrats, also some -- republicans that are looking to come forward the president's -- if the state legislators feel that type of pressure, it will trickle up in this particular instance to the federal level and they will have to make some changes. >> interesting, though, the voices coming out of d.c., talking about impeachment. i just want to play senator rand paul appearing on fox and what he was saying about preside

obama's am nishs proposal to curb gun violence. mayors from mayor cities are in d.c. right now meeting with vice president joe biden discussing the president's proposals. meantime, as this huffington post headline states, fury by some on the far right as the nra you might say is sticking to their guns rejecting the president's ideas. the nra's also defending the much-criticized ad that mentions the president's daughters. here's nra president david keene just this morning a couple of hours ago on the "today" show. it is not about the president's daughters. >> the ad mentions the president's daughters. >> keeping children safe, savannah. you get in to a bidding match. we shouldn't have a 30-round magazine or a 20 round. the president says let vees a ten. the governor of new york says, well, i can top that. we'll have a seven-round magazine. this is all sort of makes you feel good but, in fact, it doesn't do much. now, if you are out there and if you're crazy and if you've got a gun like this and if you're going to shoot people with it, it takes a second or so to change the magazines. >>

. if they want to hold on to the position, they have to tread carefully. >> bob: the same nra that used obama's children disgustingly. max baucus, i did his first campaign for the united states senate. he is from montana. i understand -- >> kimberly: did he win? >> bob: obviously, he wouldn't be up there. >> kimberly: you brought him in? >> bob: i did. that is not the point. baucus will vote against more than ten bullets in the clip. >> dana: they will never have a chance to vote on it. >> eric: i 100%, 1,000% agree. i don't think reid has the cojones to bring it to the senate floor. >> greg: his previous plan was to export gun to mexico so this is progress. they peer to be tough on crime. but they are only tough on guns. if they really cared there would be handgun laws for people using handgun or repeat offenders. federal law for three strikes you're out for robbery and homicides. >> bob: nra thugs -- >> greg: no, it's liberals. why do you on the left only focus on 1% of the crime when in chicago, you have, you have what one new shooting every few weeks and 42 people dying. why is that not a

that continues to play the race card. hank johnson says the n.r.a. opposes barack obama's new gun laws and executive power and says, first of all, he's black and as a black person, being the president of the united states, well, that's something they still cannot get over. why does this keep coming up in washington? >> well, the interesting thing is, one of the most famous gun cases of the last few years is the mcdonald case in chicago. and it's an african-american gentleman defending himself and wanting to have a gun to defend himself, and the government of chicago trying to prevent that from happening. and the supreme court said, the second amendment does apply to cities, that even cities like chicago cannot on their own overturn the second amendment, but this was in defense of an african-american man who wanted to own a gun to defend himself and his family. so, i don't think there's anything racist about this. clarence thomas, an african-american, one of our most famous justices, also has written in many of the early cases where whitelaw is trying to take away guns from blacks and i

know many states have modified their background check laws since then making the president's claim very difficult to prove. la lastly mr. obama said this. >> in the month since 20 precious children and six brave adults were violently taken from us, more than 900 of our fellow americans have reportedly died at the end of a gun. >> reporter: this statement is wrong. the number is much higher. according to the cdc 900 people are murdered on average every month in the u.s. by firearms. but 2,700 are killed by a gun every single month. but here is the caveat. the vast majority of those deaths, about 63%, come from suicide or accidental death. now to widen the scope of this discussion, violent crime over the last 20 years nationally has fallen by a massive amount, 50%. technically america is much safer now statistically than it's been in decades. but controlling the crime rate is not the underlying goal of the president norv congress. it's preventing more newtowns from ever happening again and there is some evidence to suggest a weapons assault ban could achieve that end. i am sam brock and t
